Unforgettable Two-Day Desert Excursion from Marrakech to Zagora

A two-day desert excursion from Marrakech is one of the most exciting ways to see a different side of Morocco—one that takes you far beyond the hustle of the city and deep into the silence of the Sahara. While it’s a short trip, this quick escape offers a real taste of desert life, epic mountain roads, cinematic history, and warm Berber hospitality.

If you’ve only got a couple of days to spare, this journey to the Zagora Desert is the perfect mix of adventure and culture. Here’s what to expect on this whirlwind Moroccan experience.

Itinerary

Day 1: From Marrakech to the Zagora Desert – Mountains, Kasbahs & Camels

We’ll start your two-day desert excursion by picking you up from your hotel or riad in Marrakech early in the morning. Get ready for a scenic drive through the legendary High Atlas Mountains.

Our first major highlight is the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, the highest road in Morocco at 2,260 meters. It’s not just the altitude that’ll take your breath away—it’s the twisting turns and endless views of rugged peaks, deep valleys, and remote Berber villages.

As we descend the pass, we’ll reach Ouarzazate, famously known as the “Hollywood of Africa.” This town is home to Atlas Studios, where blockbuster films like Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, and Game of Thrones were filmed. We’ll take a short visit here to get a sense of how Morocco has become a global cinematic backdrop.

Next, we stop to explore Taourirt Kasbah, a historic fortress with a blend of architectural beauty and cultural depth. It’s not as famous as Ait Ben Haddou, but it’s just as impressive in its own way—less crowded and full of character.

After lunch, we continue toward the Zagora Desert. This is where your Sahara experience really kicks in. At the edge of the desert, we’ll meet our camel caravan. You’ll put on a traditional scarf (we’ll show you how to tie it the desert way), then hop on your camel for a peaceful ride into the dunes.

Once we reach the camp, you’ll settle into your tent and have time to enjoy the quiet magic of the desert. As the sun sets, the sky turns into a masterpiece of color. After dinner, gather around the fire for traditional music played by local nomads under a sky full of stars.

Day 2: From Zagora Back to Marrakech – Sunrise, Palms, and Ancient Trade Routes

The second day of your two-day desert excursion starts early—but it’s worth it. Your camel guide will gently wake you up before sunrise so you can watch the sun rise slowly over the dunes, painting the landscape in gold and orange tones.

After breakfast and a quick shower at the camp or nearby lodge, we’ll begin the drive back to Marrakech—but the journey is far from over.

Our route takes us through the Draa Valley, one of Morocco’s most fertile and culturally rich regions. This vast valley stretches over 1,200 km and is lined with endless date palms, green patches of farmland, and quiet Berber villages. It’s a striking contrast to the dry desert surroundings and gives a deeper understanding of how life in these regions depends on the rhythm of water and tradition.

We’ll stop for lunch along the way, enjoying more views and flavors of southern Morocco.

Before we make our way back across the mountains, we’ll take time to visit Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most iconic ksars (fortified villages) in Morocco. This mud-brick village once served as a stopover for caravan traders moving salt, gold, and spices between sub-Saharan Africa and Marrakech. It’s still one of the most photogenic spots in the country.

After soaking in the history and grabbing some final desert snapshots, we’ll cross the Atlas Mountains again and reach Marrakech by early evening, where your two-day desert excursion will come to a close.

What Makes This Two-Day Desert Excursion Special?

  • ✔️ Ideal for travelers short on time

  • ✔️ Ride camels through real desert dunes

  • ✔️ Sleep under the stars in a desert camp

  • ✔️ Visit famous film studios and kasbahs

  • ✔️ Cross Morocco’s highest mountain pass

  • ✔️ Discover Berber life in the Draa Valley

Important Notes

This two-day desert excursion takes you to the Zagora Desert, which has smaller dunes than those of Merzouga. If your main goal is to see giant sand dunes, and you have more time (at least 3 or 4 days), we recommend checking out our longer trips to the Merzouga Desert instead.

But if you only have two days, this is by far the best way to experience the beauty and culture of Morocco’s desert regions without rushing or missing out.

What to Pack

  • Lightweight clothing for day and a warm jacket for the night

In the desert with the fabulous Driver ADDI

Group Traveller

We booked a 2 day tour over the Atlas Mountains to Zagora If you want to do a desert tour in Morocco you MUST do it with Addi. He was really super punctual and we had a very nice contact in advance via Whatt’s APP and all questions were well u. answered perfectly!

During our 2 day tour we made friends with Addi. This was really a very nice experience – as he also told us a lot about his culture and family! A highlight of our Morocco trip! Again any time

Addi picked us up promptly from our hotel in Marrakech and he immediately made us feel like we were on a good trip with him – and he always encouraged me to ask questions ….. He took us to the most amazing places, We ate with locals and were allowed to collect so many impressions and really experience Morocco from its most original side … Impressive landscapes and people we were allowed to experience …
At any time we were able to stop in a beautiful place and at our request Addi drove to the side of the road where we could take some pictures!

The coolest thing for me was the camel trek to our desert camp where we spent the night. The desert camp Camp Zagora is really LLUXUS and beautiful, clean and they cooked for us delicious – made fire and also drummed and sung! Wonderful
